Dementia is now the most common cause of death in the developed world and that’s only half the story. The impact on families and carers is incomparable to any other disease because of the way it eventually strips a loved one of who they are. Campaigners have long highlighted the under-funding of research when compared to cancer or heart disease, which of course, are also key health priorities. Now Bill Gates has pledged part of his considerable fortune to find a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, the most common form of dementia. This is a huge boost for the research community and will accelerate understanding of what causes the changes to the brain that are so catastrophic.
